The National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) has welcomed the recent publication of the Competition Commission of South Africa (CCSA) updates on the Automotive Aftermarket Guidelines. This new framework aims to boost inclusivity and competition in the automotive industry, enhancing consumer choice through a more structured, transparent marketplace.
Brandon Cohen, Chairperson of NADA, praised the revisions, stating: “We are fully committed to a robust, competitive automotive sector where there is a role for everyone.”

The guidelines' adjustments are intended to expand vehicle owners' options while still upholding critical safety and service standards—an area in which franchised dealers play a key role, according to NADA.
These revised guidelines require further review but already promise to widen consumer choice within the automotive aftermarket. However, Cohen emphasised franchised dealerships remain fundamental in delivering high-quality service due to their rigorous training and expertise, particularly in line with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) advancements.
“When consumers are well-informed, they are empowered to choose services that meet their needs. With the significant investments made by OEMs in vehicle technology, franchised dealers are ideally positioned to support these innovations with current technical skills,” says Cohen.
Franchised dealers benefit from comprehensive OEM-led training programmes that equip their staff with advanced diagnostic and repair skills, ensuring customer trust in the reliability and accuracy of service. According to NADA, this system creates a valuable layer of accountability, allowing franchisees to call on OEM support for unresolved issues, thereby strengthening consumer confidence.

“It is precisely for this reason all the vehicles advertised and, on sale through the CHANGECARS platform come from reputable dealers around the country,” says site owner Michael Pashut.
NADA also underscored franchised dealers go beyond standard servicing; they offer a complete customer support experience that spans a vehicle’s lifetime.
“Our members adhere to a stringent code of ethics, ensuring fairness in safety, servicing, mobility solutions, and financing,” Cohen explained. “We are dedicated to upholding high standards of accountability, recourse, and customer satisfaction.”
Reflecting on the CCSA’s engagement with NADA and other industry stakeholders, Cohen said: “The willingness to collaborate demonstrates a mutual commitment to trust and transparency. The automotive sector is evolving, and we believe that all players in this ecosystem can succeed.”
As the automotive industry advances, Cohen affirmed NADA’s commitment to transparency, safety, and consumer choice remains steadfast.
“Franchised dealers have long advocated for these principles, and we will continue to champion them. NADA is dedicated to fostering consumer trust and strengthening the industry through ongoing collaboration with the CCSA.”
