Volvo’s latest flagship electric SUV, the EX90, is set to join the South African market in the first half of 2025, marking a significant step in the brand’s electrification journey. Touted as the safest Volvo ever built, the EX90 debuts an ‘invisible safety shield’ — a system integrating cameras, radars, and LiDAR to enhance protection for both occupants and other road users. These advanced sensors work in tandem with the vehicle’s high-performance computing system, powered by Volvo’s proprietary software and NVIDIA DRIVE technology, to provide an unparalleled level of safety.

Built on Volvo’s state-of-the-art SPA2 platform, the EX90 strengthens the brand’s growing portfolio of battery-electric vehicles, which includes the EX30, C40 Recharge, and XC40 Recharge. In its Twin Motor Performance variant, the EX90 delivers 380 kW of power and 910 Nm of torque, allowing for swift acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,9 seconds.

Felipe Yagi, Head of Marketing & Communications at Volvo Car South Africa, believes the EX90 will appeal to those seeking a spacious, high-end family SUV with zero-emission capability.

“The EX90 has already gained international acclaim, and we’re excited to bring it to South Africa,” says Yagi. “With its groundbreaking safety features and sophisticated interior, it encapsulates the very essence of a flagship Volvo, reshaping the perception of electric luxury.”

A key concern for many electric vehicle (EV) owners — range anxiety — is addressed and the SUV boasts a range of up to 751 km in urban driving and 604 km on a combined cycle, making it well-suited for long-distance travel. Equipped with a 111 kWh battery, it supports rapid charging, reaching 80% capacity in just 30 minutes when using a 250 kW DC fast charger.

Volvo remains committed to sustainable mobility, offering a comprehensive lineup of electrified vehicles, including fully electric models, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and mild hybrids. The Swedish carmaker aims for electrified models to comprise 90-100% of its global sales by 2030, reinforcing its ambition for a greener future.

Local pricing and detailed specifications for the South African market will be disclosed closer to the official launch later this year.
