Toyota officially reveals new Hilux

Toyota has revealed the first details of the all-new, ninth-generation Hilux, a move that signals a significant shift for the vehicle by introducing its first battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell variants. This expansion into zero-emission powertrains forms part of Toyota’s broader multipath approach, which acknowledges that a single technology cannot meet the diverse needs of customers across different regions.

The new Hilux range will cater to a wider spectrum of drivers, offering a choice that includes a 48-volt hybrid system alongside continued availability of diesel and petrol combustion engines in certain markets. This strategy ensures the model maintains the qualities of quality, durability, and reliability that have defined its reputation, while adapting to a changing automotive landscape.

Externally, the Hilux's design follows a ‘Tough and Agile’ theme, presenting a more powerful front-end appearance with a strong stance. The front features slim headlight units connected by a central bar bearing the Toyota name. The battery-electric model does away with the conventional grille and is fitted with specific alloy wheels. Practical updates across the range include a new step on the rear deck for easier access and a redesigned side step.

Reflecting market trends, the new generation will be offered exclusively as a Double Cab and will be build in South Africa. Inside, the cabin sees a marked improvement in quality, taking inspiration from the latest Toyota Land Cruiser. A new horizontal console design houses a customisable driver's display and a central multimedia touchscreen, each available in sizes up to 12,3 inches. All-wheel-drive and off-road controls are grouped together, and the electric model uses a shift-by-wire drive selector. Connectivity is enhanced with a wireless charger and new rear USB ports.

For the first time, the Hilux will be equipped with electric power steering, promising more direct operation and easier manoeuvring. The Toyota T-Mate safety suite has been substantially upgraded, with new and improved functions such as an expanded Toyota Safety Sense system. This includes features like Low Speed Acceleration Suppression and an Emergency Driving Stop System. The vehicle will also receive over-the-air software updates.

The Electric Bakkie Arrives

The introduction of a battery-electric Hilux is a landmark development for the model. Toyota states that its renowned toughness has been preserved, with the fundamental body-on-frame construction retained and engineering measures implemented to protect the battery from damage and water. The wading depth is stated to be equal to the current petrol and diesel models.

The BEV version features a 59,2 kWh battery and electric motors on both axles, providing permanent all-wheel drive. Preliminary data indicates a payload of around 715 kg and a towing capacity of approximately 1 600 kg, with an estimated WLTP driving range of 240 km. Toyota has emphasised a focus on competitive charging capabilities to reduce downtime. A Multi-Terrain Select system, which adjusts vehicle performance for different off-road conditions, is also featured.

The Established Hybrid Option

The Hybrid 48V system, introduced in the current model, is set to become the volume seller for the new Hilux in Europe. Its components, including a 48V battery housed under the rear seats, work with a 2,8-litre engine to deliver refined performance, particularly from a standstill and under acceleration. The system is designed to withstand harsh conditions without compromising the vehicle's 700 mm wading capability. It maintains a one-tonne payload and a 3 500 kg towing capacity.

Combustion Engines and a Hydrogen Future

Internal combustion engines will continue to be offered, though their availability will be focused on Eastern European markets. The 2,8-litre diesel engine will replace the 2.4-litre unit and will be offered alongside the 2,7-litre petrol engine.

Looking further ahead, Toyota has confirmed that a hydrogen fuel cell electric Hilux is scheduled for production in 2028. This model is intended to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source and to encourage the development of supporting infrastructure.
