So, the Japanese have been putting in the extra hours in recent times. This past week Suzuki launched the all-new Suzuki Fronx, and it’s been followed up by the equally new Suzuki XL6, which is officially the largest vehicle in the Suzuki range.
Here’s what you can expect.
I know you’re thinking it, but no, the Suzuki XL6 does not replace the Suzuki Ertiga. Yes, the two vehicles may be similar in style, however, the new XL6 is said to be an SUV by its creators, even though it really is an MPV. The one won't cannibalise the other because the XL6 is said to be aimed at families being the larger and spacious vehicle. The Ertiga has its path already laid out, serving mainly as a transport vehicle for businesses and transport services.
Aesthetic Appeal
Looks are always a subjective matter, and the LX6 puts form and function before aesthetics. As Suzuki's largest offering, it measures 4.45 meters in length and comes in a variation of six different colours, also available in the popular two-tone colour scheme. Should you opt for the dual-tone look, there are three combinations to pick from. At the rear, you'll notice a blacked-out tailgate as well as clear tail lamps - an interesting choice by Suzuki. The XL6 also comes with daytime running lights and fog lamps. 15-inch wheels are the standard running gear and the car has a ground clearance of 118mm.
Interior Layout
In the top-spec GLX variant, you'll get everything from a 7-inch media screen with Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto. It's also kitted with a reverse camera, rear PDC, cruise control, and keyless entry with keyless start. Other nice-to-have features include leather seats, footwell and door entry lights, as well as independent rear air conditioning. Many car manufacturers offer multiple seating configurations, but few have individual pilot seats with armrests in the second row. The Suzuki XL6 is in that minority that offers this unique and comfortable seating arrangement. It also lends itself to being a spacious vehicle should you require more room. With every seat row upright, boot space is 209 litres. Fold the rear seats and that area converts into a 692-litre cavity, big enough to accommodate large items and more.
Hardware
Suzuki's famous K15B 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine has found its way into the new XL6. As in the recently launched Suzuki Fronx, the engine produces 77 kW and 188 Nm. Gearbox options are a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. With the above output figures, the XL6 isn't a mule but it does start running low on steam when pushed hard for speed and acceleration. This will be more exaggerated with a full load of passengers.
Suzuki XL6 Price
These days Suzuki seems to be getting the numbers right, starting with the recently launched Suzuki Fronx, a flawless package with a starting price tag of R279 900. The 6-seater XL6 has followed suit with a base asking price of R326 900. It's available in GL and GLX variants, both with the option of automatic and manual transmissions. The Suzuki XL6 is sold with a 4-year 60 000km service plan and a 5-year 200 000km promotional mechanical warranty with roadside assistance.
