Since its global debut in 2010 and a transformative update in 2017, the Renault Duster has carved out a reputation as a trailblazer in the SUV market. Now, the third-generation model has arrived, blending rugged charm with cutting-edge innovation to cement its status as a modern-day icon.
Produced at Renault’s Pitesti plant in Romania, where roughly 1 000 units roll off the line daily, the Duster has surpassed 2,2-million global sales. Its popularity is undeniable: in 2022, it claimed the title of Europe’s top-selling retail SUV across all segments. Locally, 26 000 units have found homes since its 2013 introduction, underscoring its enduring appeal in the compact SUV sector.

The latest Duster debuts a fresh, muscular aesthetic rooted in Renault’s new design language. David Durand, Renault’s Design Director, emphasises a “no-fuss” philosophy: “We focused on clean lines and balanced proportions early on, avoiding unnecessary styling gimmicks.”
The result? A chiselled front end with Y-shaped LED lighting, flared wheel arches, and skid plates crafted from eco-friendly Starkle — a material containing 20% recycled content. The roof bars support up to 70 kg, ideal for adventure gear, while flush rear door handles add a sleek touch.
Three trim levels are available: Zen 6MT 4WD Mild Hybrid (from R489 999), Zen EDC 4x2 and the flagship Intens EDC 4x2. The Intens adds luxe touches such as 18-inch alloys, a wireless charger and an Arkamys 3D sound system. Seven exterior hues include earthy Cedar Green and Terracotta Brown.
Inside, the cabin prioritises practicality with a 10,1-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the YouClip system for modular storage. Passengers benefit from expanded legroom and a 472-litre boot (4x2 models), while washable upholstery and rubber mats cater to messy escapades.

Renault has loaded the Duster with tech. A 7-inch digital driver display pairs with the infotainment system, which offers real-time off-road data for 4WD variants. Safety upgrades include six crash bags, blind-spot detection and a 360-degree camera. The hands-free Keycard on top-tier models adds a dash of convenience, unlocking the vehicle with a wave of a foot.
The Duster’s off-road credentials shine in its 4WD guise, boasting 217 mm ground clearance and terrain modes for snow, mud, sand and eco driving. A mild-hybrid 1,2-litre turbo-charged engine — exclusive to 4WD models — delivers 96 kW, with regenerative braking and stop-start tech cutting fuel use by 12,3%. Front-wheel-drive models pack a punchier 11 3kW 1,3-litre turbo engine, balancing efficiency and performance.
Sustainability strides include recycled materials in cladding and a ban on decorative chrome and animal-derived leather. The CMF-B platform underpinning the Duster not only boosts cabin space but also supports electrification, future-proofing the model.
