In a display of competitive karting, the South African Rotax Max Kart Challenge Nationals concluded at the Zwartkops International Kart Raceway on Saturday. The event saw a number of racers secure national titles and book their positions on the South African team for the upcoming Rotax Max Grand Finals in Bahrain this December.
Jason Coetzee from Cape Town secured the premier Rotax DD2 championship. His strategy involved finishing second behind local wildcard entry Jamie Smith in all four heats. The Cape-based drivers Sebastian Boyd and Matthew Wadeley completed the championship podium in second and third places respectively.

Durban’s Cristiano Morgado delivered a consistent performance in the DD2 Masters class, winning all four races to take the title. He was followed by Mozambican racer Cristian Bouché in second and Jonathan Pieterse from the Cape in third.
The Rotax Senior Max class, featuring a 23-kart grid, was closely contested with three different drivers winning heats. While local drivers Muhammad Wally and Kent Swartz took race victories, it was Charl Visser from Cape Town who claimed the overall title with a win in the final heat, marking his seventh national karting championship.
An eventful day in the Rotax Junior Max class saw four different winners from seventeen karts. Emma Dowling from Johannesburg won the third heat, but the championship was ultimately secured by Caleb Moss from the Eastern Cape. He finished level on points with another Eastern Province racer, Jack Moore, but took the title on countback.

The under-13 Rotax Mini Max class was won by Brodi Dowling, a local driver. Although Ronaldo Koen won three of the four heats to take the overall day’s honours, Dowling’s results, which included a heat win, were enough to earn him the national title and the team seat.
In the younger categories, Luhan de Wet from Johannesburg won the under-11 Rotax Micro Max title. The Bambino class was won by another Johannesburg youngster, Alonzo de Oliveira, who took the overall victory despite four different drivers winning the individual heats.
Rotax South Africa CEO Ed Murray congratulated the new champions, noting the high level of competition from record grids throughout the season. He confirmed that the champions have earned their places to represent South Africa at the Rotax Max Grand Finals.
