Volkswagen has pulled back the curtains on the interior of its upcoming all-electric ID. Polo, showcasing a cabin designed to feel like a ‘friend’ and setting the template for future ID models. Developed under a new ‘Pure Positive’ design philosophy, the cockpit focuses on intuitive use, higher-quality materials, and a few playful surprises – including a link back to the original Golf.
A key highlight is the retro-inspired instrument display. With a tap of a button, the modern digital dials transform to mimic the iconic screen views from the 1980s Golf I, a charming nod to the brand's heritage.

"Our new interior architecture, starting with the ID. Polo, lifts the customer experience to another level," says Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Technical Development. "We're combining clean lines, premium materials, and an intuitive environment with physical buttons and new software that adds real comfort."
This next-generation software will introduce features like a more advanced Travel Assist system, capable of recognising red traffic lights and stop signs, and a comfortable one-pedal driving mode.
The design emphasises clarity and a ‘cross-class’ feel. The dashboard features a clean, horizontal layout with two large displays: a 26 cm digital cockpit and a prominent 33 cm infotainment touchscreen. Fabric-covered surfaces on the dashboard and doors, along with thoughtfully selected materials for all touchpoints, aim to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Importantly, Volkswagen has listened to customer feedback for more physical controls. The new layout includes more direct-access buttons, a redesigned multi-function steering wheel, and a dedicated rotary controller for audio between the front seats.
Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's Chief Designer, described the car as an "affordable friend for everyday life." He added: "Clear buttons provide stability and trust, warm materials make it appealing, and details like the retro display show our typical Volkswagen wink."
Another innovative touch is the enhanced ID.Light, an interactive light strip that now extends from the base of the windscreen across the full width of the instrument panel and into the front door trim for the first time.

The ID. Polo’s interior, summarised by the design team as containing their special ‘Secret Sauce’, promises a blend of familiar Volkswagen practicality, upgraded quality, and a distinctly positive character.
