The often-unsung stalwart of the local bakkie scene, the Mitsubishi Triton, has shifted up more than a notch with the launch of the Next Gen Triton to continue its 46-year legacy by offering single cab and double cab derivatives that blend performance, design and cutting-edge technology.

The Next-Gen Triton is more than just a redesign — it is a strategic global launch for Mitsubishi, marking a significant milestone in the brand's growth phase.

“We recognise the fierce competition in the South African bakkie market, but we believe the Next-Gen Triton raises the bar in every way,” says Jeffrey Allison, General Manager of Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa. “From tailored special editions to an unbeatable warranty, this vehicle invites South Africans to redefine their adventures, both on and off the beaten track.”

At the heart of the Triton is a new, turbo-charged 4N16 DI-DC engine, delivering 135 kW of power at 3 500 r/min and 430 Nm of torque between 2 250 r/min and 2 500 r/min. This engine is paired with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The GL models come with a 2,4-litre DI-DC engine, producing 81 kW and 200 Nm, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.

In addition to the engine options, it features a completely redesigned chassis and suspension, improving ride quality and handling. The front and rear suspension systems have been updated to deliver better control on rough terrain, while the use of high-tensile materials in the chassis ensures durability without compromising comfort.

The front of the vehicle showcases the dynamic shield design, now enhanced by a robust three-dimensional grille and angular fenders, giving the Triton a commanding road presence. The sharp, hawk-like LED daytime running lights and the distinct three-light headlights add to its stance.

At the rear, T-shaped taillights stretch across the width of the vehicle, while the cabin is crafted for comfort, featuring premium materials, advanced noise-reduction technology and ample space for both driver and passengersand is 50 mm wider than its predecessor, enhancing shoulder room.

The interior boasts a horizontally themed instrument panel for better visibility, with geometric shapes and metallic accents creating a modern, high-contrast space. The 8-inch infotainment system sits at eye level for ease of use, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, while the 7-inch multi-information display provides all the essential driving data.

The cabin's ergonomic design includes comfortable seating with firm lower back support and the improved hip point offers better visibility for the driver. Additionally, ingress and egress have been enhanced with a more vertical A-pillar, making it easier to get in and out of the vehicle.

It comes equipped with the advanced Super Select II system, which ensures superior traction and stability on any surface, even in slippery conditions. Active Stability & Traction Control (ASTC) and Hill Descent Control (HDC) are standard across all models, and safety features extend to a range of crash bags, including driver, passenger, side, and curtain bags, depending on the model. The Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body construction provides added protection in the event of a collision.

The Super Select 4WD-II system, offering four selectable drive modes, including Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock provides versatility, allowing drivers to tailor their driving experience to the specific road conditions.

It now has a larger load bed and a 3,5-ton towing capacity, making it ideal for both commercial and recreational use. The cargo bed height has been lowered for easier loading and the rear bumper has been reinforced to act as a step for added practicality.

There is a diverse range of models, including three special editions designed specifically for South African customers. The Triton Athlete caters to urban professionals, offering a stylish, performance-oriented package. The Triton Edition 46 is built for off-road enthusiasts, with features designed for overlanding and rugged adventures. The Triton Xtreme Edition combines bold styling with versatile performance, perfect for those who split their time between the city and the outdoors.

Mitsubishi is also offering the Diamond Advantage programme that includes a 5-year/unlimited mileage warranty, 5-year/90 000 km service plan, and five years of unlimited roadside assistance.

“Mitsubishi is committed to delivering a vehicle that is as stylish as it is capable, offering South African drivers the ultimate bakkie for both work and play,” says Allison. “With the Next-Gen Triton, we’re inviting motorists to take on new challenges and experience the adventure of a lifetime.”
