The new ORA 5 that made its first local appearance at GWM South Africa’s annual awards ceremony in March is now confirmed for formal market introduction in July.

The model represents a change in direction for the ORA brand in South Africa. While earlier local launches focused on battery electric vehicles only, the ORA 5 will be offered with three powertrain types under a single body style. Buyers will have the option of conventional petrol, hybrid (HEV) or battery electric (BEV) versions.

All three configurations share GWM’s ONE platform that accepts different propulsion systems without requiring major structural changes. The approach lets the manufacturer offer a range of options without building separate platforms for each powertrain.

The exterior uses rounded lines and modern proportions. A wide selection of colour options is available. The design emphasises compact SUV practicality while setting the ORA 5 apart from more conventional models in the segment. According to GWM, customer interest in distinctive styling has grown alongside demand for safety, technology and everyday usability.

Inside, the ORA 5 runs GWM’s latest Coffee OS infotainment system. The interface is arranged to keep driver interaction simple, with vehicle controls and connectivity features grouped in a logical manner.

A full set of advanced driver assistance systems will come as standard equipment. Specific safety features for the South African market have not yet been confirmed. More details are expected closer to the July launch date.

Floyd Ramabulana, Head of Marketing at GWM South Africa, said the model is intended to give buyers options without locking them into a single technology. “It gives customers the freedom to choose the vehicle configuration that best suits their lifestyle, while still enjoying the technology, design and practicality expected from a GWM compact SUV.”

The ORA 5 launch forms part of GWM South Africa’s wider expansion in the compact SUV segment. Local pricing, specification levels and service plan details have not been released. Those are expected to be announced in the months leading up to the July introduction.
