Toyota has confirmed that the sixth-generation RAV4 will arrive in South Africa, following its global debut in Japan. The latest iteration of the popular SUV aligns with the brand’s “Life is an Adventure” ethos, targeting drivers seeking versatility, advanced technology, and electrified performance.

The new RAV4 introduces plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) variants, both leveraging Toyota’s sixth-generation electrification systems. The PHEV model claims a battery-only range of up to 150km—a notable increase from its predecessor—and supports DC fast charging, reaching 80% capacity in 30 minutes. Toyota has also enhanced its off-road capabilities with higher motor output and added vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionality, allowing the SUV to act as a mobile power source during outages or outdoor excursions. The HEV version features optimised components for quicker acceleration and smoother urban driving.

Visually, the RAV4 adopts a bold design philosophy centred on robust tyres, off-road readiness, and practical cargo space. The interior prioritises functionality, with a lowered dashboard for improved visibility, a reversible centre console, and expanded boot capacity. An “island architecture” layout groups key controls to reduce driver distraction, while updated infotainment systems offer faster smartphone integration and voice recognition.

Three styling options will cater to diverse preferences: the urban-focused CORE, the rugged ADVENTURE with reinforced wheel arches, and the GR SPORT, which incorporates motorsport-inspired suspension and design elements.

Technologically, the RAV4 debuts Toyota’s Arene software platform, enabling over-the-air updates to enhance safety and user experience. The latest Toyota Safety Sense package includes an Emergency Driving Stop System and refined acceleration controls to mitigate unintended movements.

While South African specifications and pricing remain under wraps, local consumers can expect the new RAV4 to join Toyota’s lineup in the coming months, alongside its rollout to over 180 global markets.
