The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed details of two separate safety recalls impacting specific Chevrolet motor cars and Honda Goldwing motorcycles sold nationally.

Stellantis South Africa, handling Chevrolet locally, has recalled certain Cruze, Aveo and Orlando models manufactured and sold between 2010 and 2018. The recall centres on the driver's crash bag system.

The company explained the propellant inside the bag inflator could change over time. This alteration might cause the propellant to generate gas faster than intended if the bag deploys during a crash. Such a malfunction presents a potential safety risk to the driver in a collision event.

Stellantis, via the NCC, directs affected owners to arrange a repair or replacement of the driver's crash bag at their nearest authorised Chevrolet dealership.

In a separate action, Honda Motor Southern Africa has recalled specific Goldwing motorcycle models sold between 2018 and 2021. The affected variants are GL1800B, GL1800BD, GL1800D, and GL1800DA.

Honda identified a potential issue with the engine’s primary drive gear tightening bolt. The company stated  bolt could fail, potentially causing the engine to stop unexpectedly while driving, preventing restart. Honda noted this could, under certain circumstances, lead to engine lock and rear wheel lock-up.

Owners of these motorcycles are required to visit their nearest Honda dealership for a replacement primary drive gear tightening bolt. Honda confirmed the new bolt features enhanced fatigue strength.

NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba confirmed the Commission is monitoring both recall processes. Both Stellantis and Honda have committed to carrying out the necessary repairs without charge to consumers.

The NCC urges owners of the specified Chevrolet and Honda models to check if their vehicle or motorcycle is included in the recall. Consumers uncertain about their vehicle's status are encouraged to contact their respective brand dealerships for verification and assistance. Prompt action is advised to address the identified safety concerns.
