The New York International Auto is in full swing and, although it has the word international in the monniker, the product reveals are more often than not very American but, on the opening day, a few things worth noting popped up.

Volkswagen took the wraps off its fresh 2027 Atlas at the New York International Auto Show. The big SUV has been given a proper once-over, with new body panels and updated lights front and back. It looks a bit more posh now, but nothing too flashy.
Inside, things have also been given a rethink. You now get real wood trim as standard, ambient lighting, and if you tick the right boxes, a 38-centimetre infotainment screen, Nappa leather, and massaging front seats. Lekker for long trips.
VW says they’ve kept families in mind. The new Atlas comes with a power tailgate, rear sunshades, two wireless charging pads and voice control that actually listens. Safety’s been beefed up too – there’s a new front centre crash bag and an improved IQ.DRIVE driver assist package.

Kjell Gruner, boss of VW America, said: “The new Atlas brings more of what matters – stronger design, smarter tech, more power, and a premium feel where it counts.”
Under the skin, it’s built on VW’s new MQB evo platform. The third row is still spacious, and there’s plenty of packing space. The updated two-litre turbo engine makes more power and should use less fuel than the old one.
Subaru’s first full-electric family SUV: meet the Getaway

Our Subaru selection is comprehensive - pop in and take a look
Subaru unveiled its new all-electric 2027 Getaway at the show. It’s the brand’s most powerful production car yet, with 313 kilowatts on tap – perfect for a quick escape, whether you’re dodging taxis or heading up Sani Pass.
The Getaway seats seven, comes with Subaru’s famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard, and has a range of more than 480 kilometres. It’ll hit US showrooms in late 2026.
The name is meant to show it’s a family-friendly soft-roader, with 21 centimetres of ground clearance, decent boot space, and enough gadgets to keep everyone happy. Dual electric motors do the pulling – one on each axle.
Hyundai’s boxy new concept: a proper off-road bruiser

More than enough to go round - check out these Hyundai beauties
Hyundai surprised everyone with the Boulder Concept – a chunky, boxy SUV that hints at something proper rugged.
It’s built on a ladder-frame-style chassis, the kind American okes love for towing and bundu bashing. Hyundai says this platform will eventually underpin a production midsize bakkie due by 2030.
José Muñoz, Hyundai’s big boss, said: “We’re giving customers more of what they want. Body-on-frame vehicles are the backbone of American work and adventure. We’re entering new segments, designed in America, built by Americans.”
