Having sampled the current Mercedes-Benz C220d in 2022, getting into the SUV version was an exciting prospect, the model in question would be the Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d. What was striking about the C-Class was its outstanding looks, as well as having one of the most fuel-efficient diesel powertrains in the market. After a four day round trip from Johannesburg to Durban, the average fuel consumption in the C220d was 4.7l/100km and the entire trip was done on one tank of diesel.

You see, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d shares the same engine as its C-Class sibling, making it just as frugal and rewarding if you drive it well. Unfortunately, no long-distance economy run was undertaken this time, but we learned a lot about the new GLC. For starters, its engine has the same magical found in the C220d, thanks to Mercedes-Benz's 48-volt technology which in conjunction with the 2.0-litre motor, performs wizardry to bring the fuel consumption down to ridiculously low figures while driving. The refinement of this engine is evident in the Mercedes-Benz GLC as it gently purrs to life on startup, and continues to run unobtrusively. Mercedes-Benz says the GLC 220d will average 5.2l/100km, however, we managed to average 6.4l/100km and our aim was in no way an attempt to save fuel. With EQ boost, the GLC 220d has a combined output of 162 Nm and 640 Nm, remove the EQ boost and the four-cylinder still delivers a healthy 145 kW and 440 Nm.

The look and feel of your GLC will largely depend on your palette and the package you opt for. We tested the Avantgarde with optional 19-inch alloy wheels and as it turns out, it's the more subtle of the two trims. Also on offer is the AMG Line, which announces itself from a distance with its alluring athletic look. Between the two, it's an easy choice - the AMG Line. The GLC has a reworked front with a tweaked grille and headlamps. Its taillights are also streamlined as part of the facelift aesthetic. Should you desire the nice running boards and the panoramic sunroof, you're going to have to dig deeper into your pockets as these are optional extras. The sliding glass roof will set you back a cool R25 560, it's one of those features you don't need but is a delight to have on board.

Cabin layout

It is after all a Mercedes-Benz, so expect to be met with quality materials and finishes inside. A multitude of designer-like air vents line the dashboard joined by two display screens; one for the instrument cluster and the other acting as the GLC's command post. This media screen is one of the best of its kind ergonomically. Usually, these screens are irksome but the Germans made the GLCs easily accessible both in terms of function and how it's positioned.  Your MBUX Multimedia System with onboard navigation, and smartphone mirroring through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available through this display, alongside a host of other vehicle settings and apps. A positive touch to the GLC's premium features is the soft open/close windows that have two different speeds depending on how much pressure is used on the button. Aside from tech and features, the GLC has a roomy and comfortable cabin, which is to be expected and is pleasant to pilot with its sure-footed road handling.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Range

There are six variants in the current GLC range, and all come standard with the brand's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. You have a choice between the GLC 220d, GLC 300d and the GLC 300 petrol variant. The two oil burners make use of a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine, however, the 300d has been tuned to produce 198 kW and 550 Nm before EQ boost. With boost, you get a total of 215 kW and 750 Nm. A 2.0-litre engine is also present in the petrol GLC 300, with an engine output of 207 kW and 400 Nm.
