Chinese automaker BYD has introduced its latest plug-in hybrid SUV, the ATTO 8, to the South African market. The new seven-seat vehicle marks a notable step for the brand as it looks to gain traction among local buyers seeking more space and efficiency. Pricing for the Premium (DM-i) variant starts at R1 059 900, while the Performance (DM-p) edition is priced at R1 259 900.
The ATTO 8 is designed to handle both city driving and longer road trips. Each version offers a different balance between fuel economy and power, giving buyers the chance to choose according to their needs. The vehicle measures more than five metres in length, with a wheelbase of 2 950 mm, which translates into a roomy interior aimed at families who need both comfort and practicality.

Under the bonnet, the ATTO 8 uses BYD’s fifth-generation DM Super Hybrid Technology. The Premium edition provides a combined range of up to 728 km, making it a solid option for longer journeys. The Performance edition steps things up with 359 kW of power and adaptive body control that adjusts to different road surfaces. This means the ATTO 8 can work as an everyday family hauler or as a more spirited drive when the road opens up.
The engineering goes further across both plug-in hybrid and fully electric setups. The DM-p plug-in hybrid pairs a 1,5-litre turbo-charged engine with two electric motors, producing up to 400 kW and sprinting from 0–100 km/h in 4,3 seconds.
The all-electric version pushes output to 810 kW and trims the 0–100 km/h time to 3,9 seconds. Battery options include a 35.6 kWh LFP unit that offers more than 150 km of pure electric range and over 1 000 km combined, while the BEV version comes with a roughly 100 kWh battery capable of exceeding 600 km on a single charge.
Charging technology also gets attention. The ATTO 8 is built on a 1 000-volt ‘Super E’ platform, which allows for ultra-fast charging. In the BEV configuration, the system can add more than 400 km of range in about five minutes.

Inside, the seven-seat cabin features a 15,6-inch infotainment screen, a 21-speaker sound system and Level 2+ DiPilot 300 driver assistance with laser-based sensing. Finishes include leather upholstery, bamboo-wood trim, 21-inch wheels and a full 360-degree camera system.
Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa, said the launch reflects the company’s aim to meet what local drivers are looking for. “The ATTO 8 combines innovation, space and performance in a way that feels both premium and accessible, whether you are navigating the city or travelling with family over long distances.”
The interior can be reconfigured easily, with foldable seating that creates room for passengers, luggage, or even leisure use. The cabin experience leans on intelligent features and a thoughtful layout, aiming to feel less like a traditional vehicle and more like a mobile living space. Technology plays a central role, from the sound system to the connectivity features, with the goal of making the drive feel intuitive and seamless.
Chang added, “As a seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV, the ATTO 8 sets a new benchmark in its category. It delivers a driving experience that is not only powerful and efficient, but also comfortable, intelligent and reassuring in every scenario.”
