BYD Auto South Africa has announced the official retail pricing for its new Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid SUV, which is now available at dealerships across the country. The vehicle arrives in two model variants. The Sealion 5 Comfort model will retail for R499 900, while the Sealion 5 Dynamic is priced at R569 900. Both recommended retail prices include VAT.
According to Steve Chang, Managing Director at BYD Auto South Africa, the pricing strategy is a deliberate effort to broaden access to hybrid technology. "With the Sealion 5 starting at R499 900, we are redefining value in the SUV market," Chang said. "This move makes advanced plug-in hybrid technology accessible and shows that South African families do not have to choose between efficiency, premium features and financial practicality."

The Sealion 5 utilises BYD’s DM-i hybrid platform, which is designed to prioritise electric power for city driving while providing the flexibility of a hybrid for longer journeys. The interior features a 12,8-inch infotainment screen with voice control, keyless entry and wireless charging. Practical family touches include a spacious second row, a large boot with an electric tailgate and 60:40 split-folding rear seats.
Standard features across both variants include heated and ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera with parking sensors, a sunroof with a sunshade and multiple USB charging ports. A notable inclusion is the vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, which allows the car to power external electrical devices, a feature positioned as useful within South Africa’s current energy context.

"The Sealion 5 is built for the realities of our market," noted Mark Handley, Commercial Director at BYD Auto South Africa. "It shows how new-energy technology can be a practical part of everyday family life, delivering a balance of efficiency, quality and value."
The launch forms part of BYD’s continued expansion locally, which includes a growing range of pure electric and plug-in hybrid models. The company also confirmed it is continuing the rollout of between 200 and 300 EV chargers nationwide to support the growing ecosystem.
"These developments are driven by core technologies that define our approach to new energy vehicles," added Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director at BYD Auto South Africa.
