Affordability is the key driving factor in the majority of vehicle purchasing decisions with Chinese imports taking a growing share of the market but the sticker price is only the beginning of the ownership journey and, even with service or maintenance plans in place, car buyers need to be aware of parts replacement costs.

Independent benchmarking by MAPO in the compact?sedan segment has found the Changan Alsvin costs less to own and maintain than the segment average, with savings that become more pronounced as vehicles accumulate kilometres.

Tests that compared the Alsvin with mainstream Japanese models and a locally produced German contender examined routine wear?and?tear items — brakes, discs, engine components, clutches and suspension parts — and placed the Alsvin as the second most affordable car to operate in the group.

At the 75 000 km ownership mark, scheduled servicing for the Alsvin was about 30% cheaper than the segment average. The gap narrowed slightly as vehicles aged but remained significant: servicing costs were roughly 22% lower at 90 000 km and about 25% lower at 150 000 km.

The benchmarking also analysed the 150 most commonly replaced parts in the segment. On that measure the Alsvin’s parts ‘basket’ came in substantially cheaper, with a net?effect score indicating around 49% lower costs than the average, a difference that translates into lower long?term maintenance bills for owners.

Crash and body?part pricing followed the same pattern. The analysis showed replacement roof panels for the Alsvin were about 28% cheaper, while bonnets, bumpers and boot panels were 21% to 43% less expensive than comparable items from mainstream rivals.

Other exterior components often damaged in minor incidents — rear doors, front fenders and a complete grille assembly — were reported to be approximately 37%, 23% and 100% more cost?effective respectively against nearest competitors.

Those savings are particularly relevant for high-utilisation operators such as fleet managers, ride-share drivers and car rental companies, where maintenance frequency and repair costs have a direct impact on profitability.

Changan has also invested in local parts logistics to support after?sales service. All genuine replacement parts are distributed from a Changan Parts Warehouse in Pomona, Johannesburg, a facility with a reported floor area of 7 500 m².

The company says the warehouse operates in partnership with DP World to manage warehousing and supply?chain functions, aiming to ensure rapid parts availability and delivery to an expanding network of dealerships and service centres across South Africa.

Changan’s approach, according to the benchmarking results, appears to be driven by engineering and pricing choices that prioritise predictable running costs rather than short?term showroom appeal. For South African motorists weighing total cost of ownership, the data suggests the Alsvin may offer measurable savings over the life of the vehicle.
