South Africa’s electric vehicle segment is showing steady momentum, with EV sales rising during May as part of a gradual but measurable shift in the local automotive landscape. Against this backdrop, Changan has introduced a range of new-energy vehicles designed not around a single breakthrough, but around varied consumer needs for distance, durability and value.

For Changan, the answer lies in a multi-model EV strategy that prioritises choice, practicality and aspiration. The Hunter K50 REEV targets buyers seeking bakkie robustness combined with electric drivetrain intelligence. The Deepal S07 and the forthcoming S05 REEV offer a more refined, design-focused expression of electric mobility aimed at the premium end of the market.

The Hunter K50 REEV positions itself as the world’s first range-extended electric bakkie. It pairs an electric drive system with a 2,0-litre turbo-charged petrol generator, providing the smooth response of electric power while addressing range concerns for longer journeys. On weekday commutes, the vehicle operates primarily on electric power. For extended trips, the range extender helps reduce the charging anxiety that has historically slowed EV uptake in the country.

The Hunter K50 REEV delivers 200 kW of total power and 470 Nm of torque. It comes with four-wheel drive, a pure-electric range of up to 145 km, and a combined range of up to 1 000 km when the range extender is active. Practical specifications include a payload of 1 010 kg, a braked towing capacity of 2 200 kg, a wading depth of 600 mm and ground clearance of up to 220 mm when unladen.

While the Hunter K50 REEV focuses on bridging toughness with technology, the Deepal S07 aims to make electric mobility feel premium and intelligent. Its exterior design is clean and sculptural, featuring frameless doors, concealed door handles, LED lighting signatures and a low stance. Inside, the cabin draws from Mediterranean yacht design, with premium materials, a central console, a panoramic roof and an uncluttered layout.

The Deepal S07 produces 160 kW and 320 Nm via rear-wheel drive, with a pure EV range of 500 km. Fast charging from 30% to 80% is estimated at 35 minutes. The cabin includes a 15,6-inch ‘Sunflower’ infotainment screen, an augmented-reality head-up display, a 14-speaker audio system, wireless charging, Wi-Fi, voice control, gesture recognition and a 540-degree camera system.

The incoming Deepal S05 REEV brings the same design philosophy and intelligent technology to a more compact, city-friendly package. Like the Hunter K50, it is a range-extended SUV. It uses a 27,28 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, offering a pure electric range of at least 160 km, with fast charging from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes. Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 160 kW and 320 Nm, supported by a 1,5-litre range extender, for a combined range of up to 1 000 km.

The S05 REEV also features a 15,4-inch 2,5K central control screen, AR head-up display, 14-speaker audio system, 540-degree panoramic imaging, frameless doors and a suite of intelligent ADAS features.

“South African motorists are ready for a smarter, more practical approach to electrified mobility,” says Marinus Venter, General Manager of Changan South Africa. “Our next-generation EV lineup has been developed to balance innovation with real-world usability, giving customers the confidence, technology and versatility they need for everyday driving conditions.

“Whether it is the capability of the Hunter K50 REEV or the premium intelligence of the Deepal range, our focus remains on making advanced mobility more accessible and more relevant for the local market.”

In a market where innovation must be accessible, functional and attractive, Changan’s approach may prove timely.
