Changan has confirmed its UNI-S model will reach South Africa in April 2026, adding a mid-size SUV to its local line-up with a focus on mainstream buyers. The vehicle forms part of a model family that originated with the CS55, first introduced in China in 2017, and has been marketed in refreshed form overseas since 2024.

Changan South Africa says the UNI-S will compete in the mid-size SUV segment, which accounts for high sales volumes and draws close buyer scrutiny in the local market. The distributor describes the model as a significant addition to its range and notes specification levels are intended to align with established competitors.

The UNI-S belongs to Changan’s CS55 and UNI family, a line that began with the CS55 in China in 2017. The UNI-S name and updated third-generation package were introduced in overseas markets as a facelifted CS55 variant during 2024 and 2025, with regional launches and market-specific badging appearing in the Middle East and other export destinations – total sales exceeding 1-million units.

The South African-bound UNI-S will feature a 1,5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 138 kW and 300 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. The vehicle’s dimensions and wheelbase place it in the mid-size category.

Mechanical features include multi-link independent rear suspension, along with a suite of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and a 540-degree camera system. Interior equipment includes large infotainment screens and comfort features such as heated, ventilated and massaging front seats.

Changan’s local management positions the UNI-S as a mainstream contender rather than a niche offering, aiming to compete on specification and perceived value rather than price alone. The model will sit alongside the CS75 Pro in Changan’s South African line-up and is expected to appeal to buyers who prioritise equipment levels, safety technology and cabin comfort.

Official local pricing has not yet been released, but we expect it to be around R699 900.
