Ever watched a movie and fancied yourself behind the wheel of the car driven by the hero? Over the years many cars have been catapulted to legendary status by making their own star appearances in movies where, often, they are called upon to some amazing driving.

A recent study by DJC Law  has revealed how crashable famous movie cars are, analysing the real-life safety of iconic vehicles featured in movies. By comparing actual crash data with sales figures from 2018 to 2022, the study calculated a crash rate to determine how many accidents occurred per 10K vehicles of each model. This metric provides insight into which beloved movie cars might warrant a second thought before becoming your daily driver.

The Chevrolet Impala from Supernatural (the highest-ranked movie on the list) ranks first with the highest crash rate of 238 fatal accidents per 10K cars sold. Over four years, it was involved in the greatest number of fatal crashes (nearly 2 700), despite just 113K units sold.

The Ford Mustang GT Fastback from Bullitt takes second place with a crash rate of 62. With more than 310K units sold, it also had the highest sales on the list. Featured in one of cinema’s most famous car chases, the Mustang is both highly visible and has significant crash data.

The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 from 2 Fast 2 Furious ranks third with a crash rate of 40. This high-performance vehicle recorded 10 fatal crashes with just 2 500 units sold, making it a rare but risky choice for drivers drawn to its speed and reputation.

The Chevrolet Corvette C8 from Rise of the Beasts ranks fourth with a crash rate of 27. In four years, it was involved in 354 fatal crashes out of nearly 130K units sold. The Corvette balances strong sales with a moderate crash rate for its category.

The Acura NSX Type S from Thor: Love & Thunder ranks fifth with a crash rate of 15. With fewer than 2 000 units sold and only three fatal crashes, the NSX stands out for its rarity and relatively low crash rate.

The Lucid Air Sapphire from Leave the World Behind ranks sixth with a crash rate of 5. It recorded just one fatal crash across almost 2 000 units sold. As an electric vehicle, the Lucid Air combines innovation with strong safety metrics.

The Lamborghini Huracan STO from The Flash ranks seventh with a crash rate of 4. It had seven fatal crashes across nearly 15K units sold. The Huracan’s high-performance design attracts thrill-seekers, but its crash rate is lower than most in its category.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series from The Gray Man ranks eighth with a crash rate of 3. Four fatal crashes occurred out of 16K units sold. The GT Black Series combines performance engineering with a relatively low crash risk.

The Land Rover Defender from No Time to Die ranks ninth with a crash rate of 1, the second lowest on the list. It recorded five fatal crashes across 44K units sold. As the most searched car, with 12-million monthly searches, the Defender’s durability and safety continue to make it a top choice for drivers.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S, also featured in The Gray Man, ranks tenth with the lowest crash rate of just 1. It recorded two fatal crashes out of 21K units sold.

A spokesperson from DJC Law commented on the study: "Cars that grab attention on social media aren’t always the easiest or safest to drive. Flashy designs and high performance can be exciting, but they often come with challenges on the road. It’s a good idea to think about how a car handles and its safety record, not just how it looks or the hype around it. Sometimes, the coolest cars demand a bit more caution behind the wheel."
