The numbers that matter first: 210 kW and 400 Nm. Those are the outputs from the GR Corolla's punchy 1,6-litre turbo-charged three-cylinder engine, and now, for the first time in South Africa, that punch is being delivered through a brand new eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has officially expanded its Gazoo Racing performance roster, introducing an all-new 8-speed Automatic (8AT) variant to the GR Corolla line-up. Developed with sustained high-load driving in mind – think track days and fast road work – the new transmission option is designed to make the hot hatch more accessible without diluting the hardcore character of its GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system.

Since its arrival on local soil in 2023, the GR Corolla has carved out a serious reputation as the brand's second compact GR weapon after the legendary GR Yaris. Initially offered exclusively as a six-speed manual, the Corolla proved itself a heavyweight contender in the hot hatch segment. Now, with the addition of the automatic, Toyota is broadening the car's appeal while keeping the driving purists firmly in mind.

To ensure the new 'box can handle serious punishment, engineers have thrown significant cooling hardware at the problem. The automatic variant scores an air-cooled transmission fluid cooler, backed up by an extra sub-radiator tucked behind the front vents. A cool-air duct has also been integrated above the brake duct to manage airflow and keep thermal efficiency in check.

On the aero front, the front fog lamps have been deleted to reduce drag and clean up the nose, while privacy glass for the rear quarters adds a touch of stealth. Under the skin, the GR Corolla now benefits from Torsen limited-slip differentials across the range, sharpening cornering traction. Rebound springs have been added to the shocks to control inner wheel lift during aggressive cornering, and the rear suspension geometry has been tweaked to improve anti-squat when you get on the power.

The new gearbox itself is a dedicated piece of kit. Dubbed the GR Direct Automatic Transmission (GR D-AT), it is engineered for circuit work, delivering rapid shifts and anticipating driver inputs via paddle shifters. It allows the driver to focus purely on steering and throttle placement, a feature that will appeal to those who want performance without the clutch work.

Plenty of punch from upfront

Inside, the cabin has been given a subtle motorsport makeover. Chrome accents have been binned in favour of GR gun metallic finishes on the dash, centre console, and even the gear knob. The iMT switch has been moved to the front of the shifter for easier access, grouping the essential controls where they belong. Kit levels have also climbed, with all models now featuring an upgraded audio system, active noise control, blind-spot monitoring with Safe Exit Assist, and a more sophisticated smart door-lock system.

The beating heart remains the same: a turbocharged 1,6-litre triple pushing 210 kW and 400 Nm to all four wheels via the GR-FOUR system, good for a top speed of 230 km/h. Drivers can toggle through Eco, Normal, and Sport modes, while the mechanical handbrake and triple-exit exhaust ensure the driving experience is as theatrical as it is rapid.

Safety and tech are well covered, with the Circuit Edition featuring a Head-Up Display, a seven-inch infotainment screen with wireless charging and smartphone mirroring, and Toyota Safety Sense as standard.

The Toyota GR Corolla is available in Midnight Red, Glacier White, Raven Black, and Fierce Red.
