Separated by two minutes, Benjamin Habig and Barry White overcame wet and slippery conditions to propel their Volkswagen Polo to overall victory in the opening round of the SA National Rally Championship; and all-tar event held at Gerotek and Zwartkops Raceway.

A smidgen over two minutes behind were Chris Coertse/Matt Kohler in a Mazda 2, the two front runners taking similar positions in the NRC1 Class with third-placed Kent and Justin Rutherford putting in a sterling performance to win the NRC 3 class in their Volkswagen Polo and finishing ahead of the NRC 1 Polo of Paul Rutherford and Willemjan Human.

Behind then there was an enterntaining tussle for honours in the NRC 2 category with Johan Strauss and Caro Storm taking class kudos in their Subaru Impreza ahead of rally newbie Mark Jones with Kes Naidoo navigating in a Toyota Yaris.

Run three times each the special stages at Gerotek had competitors tackling the fearsome mountain road section featuring jumps, adverse camber corners and a water splash that had throngs of spectators delighted as the cars launched into the air coming out of the dip.

This was alternated with a few laps around the tight and twisty Ride-and=Handling track that produced some glorious sideway action – which got even more so as the heavens opened at Zwartkops Raceway where the kart and main circuit became extremely slick, requiring the absolute best from the drivers.

Pre 2000, all-tar rallies were a fixture of the National Championship and, spectator interest in the even this past weekend suggests it should become a fixture on the calendar going forward.
