Isuzu Motors South Africa has increased its support for Gift of the Givers’ relief operations in Nelson Mandela Bay, where recent floods and severe weather have disrupted daily life and restricted access to basic services. The company has added two more Isuzu D-MAX bakkies to the vehicles already assisting teams on the ground.

With the latest deployment, the fleet now includes three Isuzu D-MAX bakkies — two double cab 3,0-litre models and one single cab 3,0-litre — along with two Isuzu water tanker trucks equipped with 5 000-litre tanks. These vehicles are being used to reach affected communities and support the distribution of essential supplies.

Nandi Matomela, Department Executive for Corporate Affairs at Isuzu Motors South Africa, said the company’s long-standing presence in Nelson Mandela Bay shaped its response. She noted that working with Gift of the Givers and local authorities allows for a coordinated effort to assist residents who have been hardest hit.

Relief operations are currently centred around 18 community shelters set up by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Residents arriving at these sites are receiving meals, drinking water, blankets, toiletries and hot beverages as assessments of needs continue.

Gift of the Givers Project Manager Ali Sablay said teams are operating closely with the Eastern Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre and the metro following heightened weather alerts. Additional staff and supplies have been dispatched from the organisation’s warehouses in Adelaide and the Western Cape.

Sablay added that while flooding has made access difficult in some areas, the expanded Isuzu fleet is helping teams reach more communities and deliver aid ranging from food parcels and hygiene packs to blankets and hot meals. Search and rescue teams remain on standby to assist local authorities if required.

Relief work is ongoing, with teams continuing to monitor conditions and respond where help is needed. Residents are advised to follow official communication from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for updates on shelters and support services.
