Jaecoo has confirmed the upcoming introduction of its J7 SHS plug-in hybrid SUV to the South African market, scheduled for next month. Positioned as the brand’s second model locally and its first electrified offering, the J7 SHS signals a strategic expansion for Jaecoo, with additional hybrid and electric models expected in the coming months.

The J7 SHS combines a turbo-charged 1,5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 255 kW and 525 Nm. Power is managed through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), designed to balance performance with efficiency.

A key feature is its 90 km all-electric range, enabling shorter commutes without fuel use or emissions. Using a 40 kW DC charger, the 18,3 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate battery can recharge from 30% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes.

With a claimed combined range of 1 200 km on a single tank, the model registers fuel consumption below 5,0 l/100 km. During a recent 1 100 km test drive between Cape Town and Gqeberha, it achieved an average of 4,88 l/100 km.

Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, highlighted the vehicle’s alignment with modern driver priorities: “The J7 SHS merges responsive performance, efficiency, and premium comfort, catering to those seeking reduced emissions, cost savings, or adaptable driving modes.”

The SUV will feature a leather-appointed interior, ambient lighting, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Standard technology includes an eight-speaker Sony audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over 15 driver-assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision alerts, and rear cross-traffic braking support.

Final specifications and pricing will be confirmed at launch. The J7 SHS will be followed by new Jaecoo models, including the J5, alongside electrified vehicles from its sister brand, Omoda.

Jaecoo, a subsidiary of Chinese automaker Chery, joins Chery’s existing local lineup—the Tiggo 4, Tiggo Cross, Tiggo 7, and Tiggo 8—as part of its broader push into hybrid and electric mobility in South Africa.
