Lexus has launched the eighth-generation ES in South Africa, marking the first time the luxury sedan is offered with a choice of hybrid-electric or fully battery-electric power. The new model is larger than its predecessor and adopts a redesigned platform, updated technology and an expanded equipment list across three derivatives.

The ES 350h EX and ES 350h SE use a 2,5-litre self-charging hybrid system with a total output of 182 kW, driving the front wheels through an E-CVT. The ES 350e SE is the first fully electric ES sold locally. It uses a front-mounted electric motor producing 167 kW and 268 Nm, powered by a 74,69 kWh battery. Lexus claims an NEDC range of up to 615 km, with DC fast charging able to replenish the battery from 0% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

Hybrid models ride on 19-inch wheels, while the electric ES 350e SE uses 21-inch wheels. Six exterior colours are available.

Inside, the ES introduces hidden switches integrated beneath the dashboard upholstery. They remain invisible when the vehicle is off and illuminate when it is started. A 12,3-inch TFT LCD meter and a new multimedia interface feature, along with an electronic shifter and a new-generation steering wheel.

The front suspension uses MacPherson struts, while the rear adopts a multi-link arrangement for the first time in an ES. The steering system uses a variable-gear rack. Lexus Safety System+ 4 includes pre-collision safety, full-speed range adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist, road sign assist and adaptive high-beam technology.
