Three and a half decades after Mazda claimed an unprecedented victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Japanese automaker's Southern African arm is channelling that legacy into a new competitive platform designed to engage a fresh generation of motorsport followers.

The Mazda Master Series, scheduled for June 20, 2026, forms part of the company's broader 787B Le Mans Heritage Campaign and seeks to commemorate what remains one of the most significant milestones in global endurance racing.

In June 1991, Mazda became the first Japanese manufacturer to secure an overall win at the gruelling French endurance classic. The victory was made all the more notable by the car that achieved it — the Mazda 787B, which remains the only rotary-powered machine to have won Le Mans outright. The achievement represented more than a statistical curiosity; it stood as a testament to the brand's willingness to pursue unconventional engineering solutions in pursuit of performance.

The 787B's four-rotor powerplant became synonymous with a distinctive auditory signature and a spirit of technical bravery that has continued to inform Mazda's approach to vehicle development. That philosophy, encapsulated in the Japanese concept of Jinba-Ittai — the harmony between horse and rider — has guided the company's design and engineering decisions for decades, prioritising the relationship between driver and machine above isolated performance metrics.

Now, Mazda Southern Africa is translating that ethos into the digital realm through a sim-racing tournament developed in partnership with Mettlestate, a local gaming and esports platform. The initiative arrives as South Africa's gaming sector continues to expand, with the country hosting approximately 26 million players and remaining the continent's largest gaming market.

The live event will bring together 40 of South Africa's top sim-racing teams, each comprising two to three drivers, for a six-hour endurance race modelled on the Le Mans format. Competitors will pilot the virtual Mazda 787B around the Circuit de la Sarthe, the same track that hosted the car's historic victory.

The live broadcast will run from 15h00 to 22h00, with motoring personalities Ernest Page from ALL THINGS MOTORING and David Christie hosting from the Mettlestate studio in Sandton.

Viewers can follow the action on the Mettlestate Twitch channel or via IGNITION TV's YouTube platform, with the race also simulcast on IGNITION TV, South Africa's dedicated motoring television channel.

Bonite Van Der Merwe, Managing Director of Mazda Southern Africa, described the initiative as an attempt to bridge the company's racing heritage with contemporary engagement methods.

"This campaign is about more than motorsport nostalgia," Van Der Merwe said. "The Mazda Master Series celebrates our heritage while connecting with a new generation of enthusiasts through gaming, performance culture, and digital storytelling. It reflects Mazda's enduring commitment to innovation, human connection, and the creation of meaningful experiences that inspire people to engage with our brand in new and exciting ways."

Competitors will race for a share of an R80,000 prize pool, supplemented by additional sponsor-backed awards. The main race prizes include R30,000 for the winning team, courtesy of Mazda Finance and WesBank, with each member also receiving Tiger Wheel & Tyre vouchers worth R10,000. Second place takes R15,000, while third place earns R5,000.

Additional awards on the day include the VAPS HCV Insurance Driver of the Day Award and Best Overtake Award, each worth R5,000, alongside King Price Insurance's Fastest Lap Award and Consistency Award, as well as the Mazda Challenger Spirit Award. Engen SA Xtreme Oil has contributed ten R1,000 prizes for teams finishing between fourth and 13th place.

Viewers tuning into the live stream will also have opportunities to win R500 Steam gaming vouchers and other sponsor prizes throughout the broadcast.

The campaign forms part of a wider heritage strategy intended to celebrate the 787B's Le Mans victory while positioning Mazda's performance credentials within a modern, digitally native context. The approach reflects the company's view that heritage should be experienced rather than simply remembered, with the sim-racing format offering enthusiasts a way to engage with the brand's history in a setting that feels current and accessible.

From the rotary engine's distinctive howl at Le Mans to the competitive environment of contemporary sim racing, the Mazda Master Series aims to demonstrate how the company continues to draw on its past while creating new touchpoints for future generations of driving enthusiasts. The connection between driver and machine that the brand has long championed remains central to the exercise, even as the medium through which it is explored continues to evolve.
