MG Motor South Africa used its inaugural recent MG Tech Day and Premium SUV Family launch in Johannesburg to show advanced automotive technology need not carry a luxury price tag, reinforcing a philosophy the British brand has carried since its founding in 1924.
The event gave guests hands-on exposure to the company's newest drivetrain, cabin and safety innovations as fitted to the all-new MG QS flagship, the freshly introduced MG HS HYBRID+ and HS PHEV, and two new normally aspirated MG ZS Pro models.
MG's heritage of accessible innovation stretches back decades. In 1931 the EX120 ‘Magic Midget’ became the first 750 cc car to break 100 mph, and the brand's record-breaking machines kept expanding the boundaries of what engineering could achieve. That same spirit is now driving real global momentum. Since 2021 MG has delivered more than 1-million vehicles in Europe and the UK, and in 2025 alone it sold over 300 000 units across Europe, of which more than 180 000 were new-energy vehicles.

Jack Wang, Vice President of MG Motor South Africa, said the day was designed to cater for every kind of buyer. "Our MG Tech Day offered something for everyone, from the new drivetrain and in-cabin technologies on show in our new entry-level MG ZS Pro models to the cutting-edge drivetrain, suspension and luxury technologies that we will soon introduce at the other end of the spectrum in the MG QS flagship.
"We believe the event not only shows the level of technological advancement of the MG brand and its SUV range, but also how accessible we have made many of these technologies to all buyers."
The MG QS is due to join the line-up as flagship at the start of 2027 and debuts a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, an intelligent hydraulic suspension with continuous damping control and the most comprehensive version of MG Pilot, the brand's suite of advanced driver assistance systems, yet fitted to an MG SUV.
A true seven-seater with three full-size rows and a 2 915 mm wheelbase, it will be offered with either a 2,0-litre turbo-petrol or plug-in hybrid powertrain, paired with a premium cabin, Bose audio and MG's signature driving dynamics.
The new MG HS range brings new-energy propulsion to the popular C-segment SUV. The HYBRID+ now runs a higher-capacity 1,83 kWh liquid-cooled battery for sharper efficiency, a longer electric-only range and smoother switching between its eight propulsion modes, while the HS PHEV pairs a 24,7 kWh battery with an electric-only range of up to 120 km on the WLTP cycle and markedly stronger peak power. First customer deliveries of both are expected in January 2027.

At the accessible end of the range, the new normally aspirated MG ZS Pro engine, mated to a next-generation CVT, returns a claimed 6,7 l/100 km on the combined cycle, while keeping LED lighting, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the popular 360-degree camera array.
MG also lifted the lid on battery developments heading for production, including new chemistry for greater capacity and improved performance in extreme temperatures, along with a smaller battery footprint that allows engineers to mount the pack lower in the vehicle for better road holding.
"These technologies aren't only developed for their own sake but are designed to offer our customers greater driving enjoyment, a higher degree of safety, better performance and lower fuel and energy consumption," Wang said.
