Mercedes-Benz South Africa has introduced the CLA 200 that aims to offer more than its predecessor in several key areas, including cabin space, comfort, onboard technology and fuel efficiency. Built on a flexible new modular platform, the CLA 200 serves as the entry point to an entirely refreshed vehicle family.

Starting with the exterior, the CLA 200 follows a design approach that leans on what the company calls athletic elegance. It uses classic grand tourer proportions, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs  and a low roofline. Muscular shoulders run from the front wheel arches along the sides, creating light and shadow effects across the body panels.

At the front, a sporty A-shaped grille features a chrome star pattern framed by an LED light guide. The Multibeam LED headlights and rear lights carry the signature Mercedes-Benz star shape, connected by slim light strips running across the vehicle. A single-piece panoramic glass roof comes standard, stretching from the windscreen to the rear screen without a central support and includes a special film to reduce heat from outside.

Under the bonnet, the CLA 200 uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This combines a 1,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor housed inside a new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Power output stands at 120 kW with 250 Nm of torque going to the front wheels. The car reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in 8,0 seconds, while fuel consumption is listed at 5,4 l/100 kilometres.

Inside, the cabin takes a minimalist approach with a strong focus on digital displays. The MBUX Superscreen spans most of the dashboard, bringing together a 10,25-inch driver display and a 14-inch central touchscreen. A floating centre console sits high to create a cockpit feel, with a three dimensional trim surface, cup holders, and a wireless charging pad for smartphones.

The door panels carry the same floating design, with large trim sections flowing around tubular grab handles. Thanks to the standard panoramic roof, the cabin feels more open than before, with extra headroom. Upholstery options include technical black and clean white pearl sports trim.

The CLA 200 is the first production model to run entirely on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, known as MB.OS. A high performance supercomputer runs the system, with real time graphics powered by the Unity game engine. The platform allows for over the air updates and introduces the fourth generation of MBUX.

This marks the first infotainment system in a car to combine generative AI agents from both Microsoft and Google. Using ChatGPT-4o and Microsoft Bing, the MBUX Virtual Assistant appears as a three dimensional animated star on the screen, capable of holding complex conversations, remembering context within a short timeframe and reading driver emotions to change its responses.

Through Google Gemini, the assistant uses the Google Maps platform to answer more complex navigation queries and search for points of interest. These features feed into the MBUX Surround Navigation display, which combines live driving assistance views with a three dimensional image of the car’s surroundings on the driver display to help with situational awareness.

Pricing is set at R937 000, which includes a 5-year or 100 000 kilometre service and maintenance plan, VAT, but excludes CO2 tax.
