Volvo's new fully electric EX90 SUV is now making its way to showrooms, with the initial batch of vehicles en route to retailers across the United States and Europe. Customers in these regions can expect to receive their vehicles by the end of this month.

Volvo plans to increase deliveries to additional markets between the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2025 and Volvo Car South Africa has announced the EX90 will launch locally in early 2025, with the first customer deliveries anticipated towards the end of the second quarter of next year.

The EX90 is Volvo's new flagship model, setting new benchmarks in safety, sustainability and user-focused technology designed to enhance and simplify daily life.

During the vehicle’s rigorous testing phase, Volvo’s CEO, Jim Rowan, personally pushed the EX90 to its limits and with his colleagues, embarked on a cross-country road trip in the United States, covering 950 kilometres across three states from Volvo's Charleston plant in South Carolina to California.

Reflecting on the journey, Rowan stated: "I can confidently say that the EX90 is the best car we have ever made. The drive, handling, comfort, and advanced technology in the EX90 surpassed all expectations. This vehicle represents the beginning of a new era for Volvo Cars."

The EX90’s debut marks a significant milestone for Volvo, being the first model powered by an advanced core system. This system integrates an AI computer built on the NVIDIA DRIVE platform, the Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and Volvo’s proprietary software.

These components work in harmony to control the vehicle's essential functions, from safety and infotainment to battery management, delivering a more responsive and intuitive driving experience.

Equipped with built-in Google services, the EX90 features an array of sensors, including radars, cameras and a lidar system supplied by Luminar, all designed to enhance safety. The vehicle's capabilities are further bolstered by an always-on 5G connection and regular over-the-air software updates, ensuring that the EX90 evolves with its owners over time.

"The Volvo EX90 represents our vision for the future as a fully electric car manufacturer, where vehicles continuously improve through core computing and software updates," Rowan added. "It’s a testament to our global engineering expertise and solidifies our role as a leader in the technological transformation of the automotive industry."

Built on Volvo's next-generation, fully electric platform, the EX90 offers a driving range of up to 600 km, and is designed to be the safest car Volvo has ever produced. The EX90 introduces several firsts for Volvo, including the integration of lidar technology, a core computing system and bi-directional charging, which allows users to contribute to a more balanced energy grid.

Production of the EX90 began earlier this year at Volvo's state-of-the-art facility near Charleston, South Carolina.

The plant, capable of producing up to 150 000 vehicles annually, has undergone significant upgrades, including the addition of a cutting-edge battery pack production line, ensuring it is well-prepared to support this new chapter in Volvo’s history.
