GAC Motor South Africa has dropped the prices of its Emkoo and Emzoom models based on foreign exchange stability and internal company cost-cutting measures and emphasises the price drop is a sustainable adjustment.

It has also asked customers who bought cars last year to call the contact centre to discuss the price reduction.

As part of a broader growth strategy, GAC Motor is ramping up its investment in South Africa. Plans are underway to expand the dealer network and service centres to 40 locations nationwide by the end of 2024 as well as introducing new models to the local market.

Leslie Ramsoomar, Managing Director of GAC Motor South Africa, highlighted the significance of the price reduction: “This adjustment reflects our belief customers should benefit directly from favourable forex conditions. It’s a win-win for everyone involved, from our loyal customers to our partners who will reap the rewards of our ongoing strategic investments in the South African market.”

Price reductions in the motor industry are extremely rare and this move by GAC, while welcome, will hopefully not spark a discount war – the last one, a good few years ago, sparking a seismic shudder in the marketplace that had massive knock-on effects on used car pricing that took years to recover.
