If you have been watching the fuel price climb with one eye while sizing up family SUVs with the other, the Geely E5 EM-i in South Africa presents an interesting calculation.
The verdict is consistent: this is not a shouty sports car or a tech gimmick. Rather, the Geely E5 EM-i is a quietly clever family SUV that delivers strong electric-first urban driving, reassuring long-distance range and generous kit for the price, making it a compelling alternative in the mid-size segment.
It is a radical departure from the brand’s offerings a decade ago and is a sophisticated piece of engineering.

Walking up to the E5 EM-i in a mall parking lot in Joburg, the first thing you notice is the aesthetic restraint. Unlike some rivals that opt for aggressive grilles, the Geely follows a minimalist, aerodynamic path. It features a mostly closed-off front end, flush door handles that pop out when you unlock the car and a full-width LED rear light bar that gives it a premium, pared-back presence – the rear clearly took a few styling cues from the Porsche Macan, which is no bad thing in this segment .
Inside, the cabin feels spacious and tech-forward. It centres on a massive 15,4-inch 2.5K HD floating touchscreen paired with a clear digital cluster. Geely moved away from the dreaded ‘piano black’ plastic that plagues many modern cars, opting instead for soft-touch surfaces and matte finishes. For South African families, the generous 528 litres of boot space is a practical win, fitting the weekly shop or pram with ease.

Under the bonnet, the plug-in hybrid system pairs a 1,5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an 18,4-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery for maximum combined of 160 and torque of 262. The electric motor provides immediate torque, making for brisk acceleration away from robots and confident overtaking on the highway.
The official figures state an electric-only range of up to 105 km, depending on the spec, and a total combined range of 943 km. However, based on our test route and the results from that, it is possible to get more than 1 000 kilometres on a single tank and charge.
When it comes to fuel economy, the numbers are solid. In everyday mixed driving, with a depleted battery, the test car averaged about 5,3 l/100 km. However, for owners who charge regularly, the running costs drop significantly with consumption figures as low as 1,2 l/100 km when the battery is kept charged.
Charging behaviour is a key consideration for South African buyers. The E5 EM-i supports DC fast charging up to 30 kW. In test conditions, a typical charge delivered roughly 105 km of electric driving. Buyers receive a complimentary wallbox charger with the vehicle, and Geely throws in R5 000 worth of free public charging to get you started.
On the move, the E5 EM-i prioritises comfort over sportiness. The suspension is tuned for a supple ride, soaking up the urban imperfections and speed bumps that characterise our suburbs. Road noise is well suppressed, creating a serene cabin environment when running on electric power.

There is a slight caveat, however. The advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including the lane-keeping alert and speed warning, are persistent. You might find the car chiming at you even when you are well within the lines. While these systems are excellent for safety, you will need to get used to switching a few of them off via the touchscreen at the start of each drive, as there is no permanent ‘set and forget’ toggle.
Safety is a major strong point. Thanks to Geely’s ownership of Volvo, the E5 EM-i is built on a robust architecture and has achieved a five-star rating in Euro NCAP tests, scoring high marks for adult and child occupant protection. The suite of tech includes a 540-degree camera system with a ‘transparent chassis’ view, which is very handy for parking in tight spots or navigating rocky driveways.
Geely’s approach to packaging means the entry-level Aspire model is incredibly well equipped, featuring the large screen and cruise control. Stepping up to the Apex trim adds the panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate and a premium sound system.
Ownership confidence is backed by a 6-year or 150 000 km vehicle warranty and an 8-year or 200 000 km battery warranty, although the service plan is limited to five years or 75 000 km.
City commuters who can charge at home or the office will see the largest savings, effectively driving as an EV during the week. Families wanting SUV practicality with lower running costs will appreciate the space and standard kit. Finally, long-distance drivers benefit from the hybrid’s petrol backup, which removes any range anxiety while still offering relaxed, quiet cruising manners.
The Geely E5 EM-i is a well-rounded plug-in hybrid. It delivers genuine electric driving for daily life in Mzansi, solid long-distance capability, and a generous equipment list. Starting at R599 999, it undercuts key rivals like the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV, making it a smart, value-led choice for buyers who can charge regularly.
