The CX-60 was introduced to SA in July 2023 as the flagship model of the local range. Bigger, fully equipped and with premium finishes throughout.

Now comes the range-topping version named Takumi meaning the achievement of excellence in every respect and, I believe that Mazda have delivered on that promise.

The heart of the new model is the Inline 6 cylinder 3,3-litre turbo-diesel engine that delivers 187 kW and 550 Nm to all wheels through an 8-speed torque convertor automatic transmission. Mazda also describe this as a mild hybrid but, very interestingly, do not quote added power figures for the battery system.

The hybrid system powers the starter motor and assists briefly on pull-off as well as powering the i-stop (stop/start) system on the engine to improve efficiency of this system. Based on our short launch drive experience it works extremely well.

The new engine transforms the CX60 into an ideal cruiser with ample power in all conditions and the typical relaxed turbodiesel driving style that I enjoy and feel is most suited to a family SUV.

As the flagship model, the Takumi spec adds absolutely all safety, luxury and convenience items as standard. The Driver Personalisation System is a stand-out for me. Using a camera system mounted on the infotainment screen this scans up to five individuals and then stores your personal settings for seat, steering wheel, mirrors and can even add radio preferences to the memory system.

The invisible bonnet camera system with 360 degree cameras is also standard as well as all possible active and passive safety systems that you now expect in an upmarket car. The lane-keep system felt a bit strong or obtrusive during our drive but can easily be turned off using a button on the steering wheel.

The Takumi is further distinguished from the other models in the range with bespoke alloy wheels, colour coded body trim and plush nappa leather interior.

The launch drive experience was simply a teaser and I certainly look forward to a full test experience soon.

The CX60 Takumi is priced at R1 049 200 and this includes a 5-year Unlimited km warranty and service plan.
