Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa has confirmed that its Osprey SUV will enter the local market during the third quarter of 2026, expanding the manufacturer's footprint in the country's competitive sport-utility vehicle segment.
The Osprey, marketed as the Nexon in other global territories, represents a strategic addition to Tata's existing model portfolio in South Africa. The decision to adopt a distinct naming convention for the local market underscores the manufacturer's approach to tailoring its offering for South African conditions and consumer preferences.

While full technical specifications for the South African market have yet to be released, the global Nexon platform on which the Osprey is based offers a range of powertrain options. International variants include petrol, diesel and electric configurations, though Tata Motors has not confirmed which derivatives will be available locally at launch.
The Osprey rides on Tata's modular platform architecture and, in global specification, is available with a 1,2-litre turbo-charged petrol engine producing 88 kW and 170 Nm of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual or automated manual transmission. Diesel variants utilise a 1,5-litre unit delivering 85 kW and 260 Nm.

The Osprey adopts the brand's current design language, featuring sequential LED daytime running lights, bi-function full LED headlamps, and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof with tilt functionality. The raised bonnet line and distinctive lighting signature contribute to an assertive on-road presence, while the vehicle's stance reflects contemporary SUV design cues.
Inside the cabin, the Osprey is equipped with a 10,25-inch Harman infotainment system, complemented by a 10,25-inch digital instrument cluster. The interior incorporates a two-spoke steering wheel with illuminated branding, a centre floor console, and a dashboard featuring leatherette mid-padding.
A physical touch panel groups primary vehicle controls into a single interface, while Connected Vehicle technology via IRA 2.0 enables remote access and monitoring through smartphone integration. The cabin features ventilated leatherette upholstery from Benecke Kaliko.
Despite its compact external dimensions, the Osprey provides seating for five occupants and offers 382 litres of cargo capacity.
The Osprey has achieved a five-star Global NCAP rating following testing in 2024, with the highest recorded adult and child occupant protection scores among vehicles tested from India. Safety specifications include Electronic Stability Programme, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, six crash bags, a 360-degree surround view system, front parking sensors, blind view monitoring, and a high-definition reverse camera.
Jeff Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Product for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa, noted that the brand has retailed more than 600 units during May 2025, following its re-entry into the South African market in the previous year.

"We have surpassed the goals we set for ourselves since returning to South Africa," says Allison. "A variety of new model launches in the medium term are set to bolster that momentum."
The global Nexon model has achieved cumulative sales exceeding 1.05 million units since its 2017 introduction, with 2025 representing the model's strongest annual performance as volumes surpassed 200,000 units for the first time.
Further specifications, pricing, and local derivative availability for the South African Osprey line-up will be confirmed closer to the vehicle's market introduction in 2026.
