Stephen Harding, a seasoned South African motorsport official and former rally navigator with more than four decades of service under his belt, has been awarded one of global motorsport’s most prestigious recognitions by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the world governing body for motorsport.

Harding, who lives in Cape Town, received the FIA Outstanding Official of the Year award, an accolade that honours his lifelong commitment to the sport. His journey began 45 years ago as a club steward, and over the decades he has risen through the ranks to hold leadership positions across touring cars, rallying, rallycross, Formula E, and rally raid. Along the way, he played a key role in organising and supporting major global events on South African soil, including iconic Formula E and Rallycross championship rounds.

The FIA presented Harding with his award this week and simultaneously released a short film on YouTube that traces his extraordinary career and service to both motorsport and the country. He is one of an estimated 302,000 volunteers and officials worldwide who power the sport in roles ranging from marshals and stewards to race directors, medical crews, and rescue teams.

The world governing body has recently established an Officials Department aimed at bringing together training, development, and support initiatives for its global network of race makers – the people who keep racing and rallying safe, smooth, and fair. According to the FIA, the variety of roles available strengthens the motorsport community, and the organisation takes pride in uniting a passionate group of people bound by their shared love of the sport.

FIA President H.E. Mohammed Ben Sulayem said, “Volunteers and officials power our sport, and I am delighted to recognise their commitment, passion, and expertise. Congratulations and thank you to our volunteers and officials for their continued service from grassroots to the global stage. It is their dedication that helps us go racing and rallying.”

Locally, Motorsport South Africa CEO Vic Maharaj extended his congratulations to Harding, calling the award thoroughly deserved.

“Stephen’s contribution to motorsport over several decades has been exceptional,” Maharaj said. “His dedication, professionalism and commitment to the development of officials have played an important role in strengthening motorsport not only in South Africa but across the African continent. This recognition by the FIA is thoroughly deserved and serves as a fitting acknowledgement of the countless hours he has devoted to the sport.”

Maharaj added that Harding’s passion for motorsport and his willingness to mentor and support others continues to inspire current and future generations of officials, ensuring a strong foundation for the sport for years to come.
