Ulterio Motiv, a newly established subsidiary of armouring company SVI Engineering, has introduced its first two vehicles, both based on the Toyota Land Cruiser 79. These vehicles are designed for demanding environments, offering robust engineering and durable construction.
The initial models include a 6x4 chassis and a 6x6 version, both aimed at providing reliable solutions for challenging terrains and heavy-duty tasks.

The aim of Ulterio Motiv's new offerings is to provide a flexible platform for customers seeking customisable vehicles. These chassis are suitable for various applications, such as camping, emergency services and off-road load carrying.
Customers can select suspension and bullbar components, like those from Ironman 4x4, or opt for their preferred alternatives based on their specific needs. The vehicles can be fitted with a custom drop-side load bin, or customers may choose to have their own rear loading area designed by a third party.
The 6x6 version of the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 is tailored for those requiring enhanced off-road capability and increased load capacity. By adding a third axle, the vehicle's gross vehicle mass (GVM) is raised to 6 050 kg, an increase of 2 850 kg over the standard model.
The additional axle is integrated into the existing chassis, maintaining structural integrity while expanding the vehicle's load-carrying capabilities. The upgraded rear axles and three differential locks further enhance its off-road performance. The vehicle also features an improved braking system with a hydraulic-assisted brake booster and braided hose lines, which can be retrofitted to other Land Cruiser 70-series models.

Due to its increased load capacity, operating this 6x6 model on public roads requires a code C1 (formerly code 10) licence.
The 6x4 variant of the Land Cruiser 79 resembles the 6x6 version, with the key difference being the rear axle is not engine-driven. The 4x4 system remains intact, and the additional axle primarily enhances the vehicle's load capacity, which is rated at 5 500 kg GVM.
The design ensures the driven axle carries 60% of the load, improving traction. The 6x4 model also comes with a braking system on the third axle for added safety. Both the 6x4 and 6x6 models are available with 35-inch steel wheels, which offer better ground clearance and improved grip in off-road conditions. Ulterio Motiv can convert existing Land Cruiser 79 vehicles into either a 6x4 or 6x6 configuration.

Public relations manager Wilhelm Lutjeharms highlighted the capabilities of the new Land Cruiser models, noting the 6x6 version offers unparalleled off-road ability and load-carrying capacity, while the more affordable 6x4 option provides similar benefits at a lower cost.

The conversion of a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 to a 6x4 costs R389 950 (excluding VAT), while the 6x6 conversion is priced at R895 000 (excluding VAT). These costs do not include the base vehicle, drop-side load bin, aftermarket wheels, or tyres but do cover the Ironman 4x4 front suspension upgrade or a similar alternative. The build time for either conversion is approximately three months, subject to prior sales.
