The Volvo EX90 has been awarded Electric Car of the Year at the Stuff Gadget Awards 2025 for balancing advanced tech, safety and refinement in a premium seven-seat electric SUV.
Built on Volvo’s SPA2 electric platform, it delivers strong performance (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds), with a 604 km combined range.
Human-centric technology and award-winning safety systems underpin the EX90’s appeal, aligning with Volvo’s focus on everyday usability.
The Volvo EX90 has been named Electric Car of the Year at the Stuff Gadget Awards 2025, recognising the brand’s flagship all-electric SUV as a standout in a rapidly evolving premium EV landscape. The award highlights the EX90’s success in delivering a rare balance of advanced technology and Volvo’s continued safety leadership.
As Volvo’s most advanced electric SUV to date, the EX90 represents a clear step forward in how luxury SUVs are conceived and engineered. Built on the brand’s next-generation SPA2 electric platform, it was developed from the outset with comfort, safety and efficiency in mind. An advanced chassis with air suspension delivers an effortless driving experience, while dual electric motors provide smooth and confident all-wheel drive performance.
The EX90’s design philosophy is rooted in Scandinavian principles, where form follows function. “We’re looking at the company’s best here,” wrote Stuff.co.za. “The EX90 for 2025 features a sufficiently futuristic exterior design to make you take the similarly tweaked interior seriously.” The cabin is among the quietest in its segment and offers genuine seven-seat versatility, combining long-distance comfort with everyday practicality.
Stuff Magazine praised the EX90’s refined performance, courtesy of the twin electric motor setup that produces 380 kW of power and 910 N.m of torque, allowing it to reach 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds with ease. The 111 kWh battery pack provides a generous range of 604 km on the combined cycle, allowing it to tackle long-distance driving with ease.
Technology plays a central role, but never at the expense of usability. A Google-based infotainment system, clear driver displays and premium audio integration are designed to support the driving experience rather than distract from it. Displays are deliberately configured to surface the most relevant information at key moments, reinforcing the brand’s human-centric approach to innovation.
This approach has earned global acclaim, including the World Luxury Car title from the World Car Awards jury, which praised the EX90’s refinement, advanced safety technology and distinctive design. Further strengthening its award-winning credentials, TIME named the EX90’s Driver Understanding System one of its 2024 Best Inventions, recognising its ability to detect driver distraction or impairment and intervene to help prevent accidents.
“It’s always encouraging to see our vehicles resonate with people who spend a lot of time with the latest technology and cars,” commented Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa. “What we’re most proud of is that this award reflects the things that really matter to us at Volvo, namely safety, comfort and technology. The EX90 was designed to make life easier and journeys more relaxed, and it’s good to see that coming through in how the vehicle is being experienced.”
