BYD Auto South Africa has brought its latest plug-in hybrid technology into the local compact SUV market with the introduction of the ATTO 2 DM-I (Dual Mode – Intelligent) and is built around the company’s DM-i Super Hybrid system and the Blade Battery, aiming to offer South African drivers a balance between electric driving efficiency and the extended range of a petrol engine.

The ATTO 2 DM-i is designed to keep fuel use low while providing the kind of flexibility that suits both daily commutes and longer trips. Its hybrid setup uses a petrol engine alongside an electric motor, with a focus on delivering a smooth and economical drive without demanding changes to how drivers typically refuel or plan their routes.

While not able to glean accurate consumption figures on the short drive around some Johannesburg suburbs after the formal launch, a constant check on the electric power indicated a fairly meagre rate of consumption with the fuel gauge barely moving and the overall distance kilometre indicator staying in the high 700’s.

The car itself was comfortable from the driver’s seat and slotted in three other adults with no complaints about leg or head room. The layout is neat and tidy and on the Dynamic version I drove, had a leather covered steering wheel and soft-touch dashboard.

Buyers can choose between two trim levels, the Comfort and the Dynamic. Both share the same hybrid powertrain and Blade Battery, and both offer a combined driving range of up to 930 kilometres.

Standard features across the range include keyless entry and start, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, and a full safety package. The Dynamic model adds several upgrades, such as premium PU seat trim, a 50W wireless phone charger, electric driver’s seat adjustment, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, front parking sensors, intelligent driving assistance features and electrically folding side mirrors.

Moving off from rest, the pickup is slow but smooth thanks to the electric power and speed gathers progressively – not designed for drag races or swift passing acceleration, although clicking it into Sport mode does produce a swifter and better response.

Handling is neutral and it rides the Jo’burg road ripples well enough to ensure your go-to-work coffee is not going to end up decorating the roof lining.

Steve Chang, managing director of BYD Auto South Africa, said the launch forms part of the company’s longer-term plans for the local market. According to Chang, the ATTO 2 DM-i is meant for drivers who are curious about electrified vehicles but need something that fits easily into everyday use. He noted that the model combines low fuel consumption, solid safety features, and practical usability in a way that should appeal to a wide range of buyers.

The compact SUV segment is one of the most contested in the country, and BYD has positioned the ATTO 2 DM-i to attract first time new energy vehicle buyers, young professionals, growing families, and anyone looking to keep running costs down without giving up comfort or performance.

Nomonde Kweyi, marketing director for BYD Auto South Africa, added: “Local customers have responded well to the brand’s expanding line up. The ATTO 2 DM-i opens the door for a new group of drivers to experience electrified mobility while still accounting for the realities of South African driving conditions, including longer distances and varied road surfaces.”

Pricing for the Comfort model starts at R449 900, while the Dynamic model is priced from R489 900. The BYD ATTO 2 DM-i will be available at BYD dealerships nationwide from June 2026.
