Ulterio Motiv – the newly launched subsidiary of armouring specialists SVI Engineering — has introduced a 6x4 conversion of the Ford Ranger that mirrors the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 6x4 and 6x6 conversions and the modified Ford Ranger is designed to handle extreme terrains and substantial payloads while retaining the comfort and luxury of the Ranger range.
The conversion allows the Ford Ranger to support a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of up to 4 500 kg, enabling a payload exceeding 2 000 kg, depending on the model. This transformation requires drivers to hold a C1 licence (formerly code 10).

The 6x4 chassis is offered as a flexible foundation for various end uses, from custom-built loading bins to specialised canopies for camping or emergency service applications. Ulterio Motiv also offers a pre-fabricated drop-side load bin measuring 1,6 metres wide by 2,5 metres long. Crucially, all original comfort, safety, and luxury features of the Ranger remain intact following the conversion.
The modification involves extending the standard Ford chassis to accommodate a non-driven third axle, which works in tandem with the existing drivetrain and 4x4 system. The rear suspension employs a bogie setup, distributing approximately 60% of the rear load to the middle (driven) axle and 40% to the third axle. This configuration enhances traction by increasing the pressure on the driven wheels.

The braking system has been upgraded, with the addition of disc brakes on the third axle that integrate seamlessly with Ford’s anti-lock braking system. Importantly, the conversion is compatible with all current-generation Ford Ranger 4x4 variants, including single, extended and double-cab models.
The 6x4 conversion is priced at R265 000 (excluding VAT, the base vehicle and optional extras). The project requires approximately six weeks to complete, offering a practical and efficient solution for individuals and businesses seeking increased capacity and rugged performance.
