Volvo’s all-electric luxury SUV, the EX90, has arrived in South Africa, marking a fresh chapter for the Swedish automaker that, in the local scenario is “re-inventing itself” in a process that including rationalising its dealer network and upgrading facilities ahead of the final steps to being an all-electric automaker.

Combining sleek Scandinavian design with advanced technology, the EX90 aims to appeal to eco-conscious drivers seeking both sophistication and practicality. Built on Volvo’s dedicated SPA2 electric vehicle platform, the model arrives in a single Ultra specification with a Twin Performance dual-motor setup, promising a blend of power, efficiency, and comfort – and a price tag of R2,65-million.

True to Volvo’s reputation, the EX90 integrates an extensive array of safety systems. Its ‘invisible safety shield’ employs LiDAR, radars, and cameras to monitor surroundings, linked to NVIDIA DRIVE-powered computers for real-time responsiveness.

Given that even opening the glove box requires interaction with the large central screen – as does adjusting the side mirrors – the LiDAR is vital to offset any driver distraction involved in accessing the various functions that might require alteration on the move.

Standard features include adaptive cruise control with steering assistance, a 360-degree camera, lane-keeping aid and intersection autobrake. The SUV also debuts Volvo’s Run-off Road Mitigation and Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alerts, designed to pre-emptively address potential hazards.

Passenger protection is reinforced with multiple crash bags, including front, side and curtain units, alongside whiplash protection and ISOFIX anchors.

“The EX90 reflects our commitment to safety innovation,” said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa’s Head of Marketing & Communications. “It’s a vehicle that prioritises occupant well-being without compromising on modern luxury.”

Inside, the EX90 balances minimalist design with intuitive tech. A 14,5-inch central touchscreen runs Google’s built-in services — Maps, Assistant and Play Store — alongside wireless Apple CarPlay. The Bowers & Wilkins audio system, enhanced by Dolby Atmos, creates an immersive soundscape, while a nine-inch driver display prioritises essential information to minimise distractions. Practical touches include wireless charging, USB ports and a configurable head-up display.

The cabin seats seven across three rows, upholstered in Volvo’s eco-friendly vinyl. Front seats feature power adjustment, lumbar support and massage functions, while heated seats extend to the second row. A heated steering wheel and optional Birch Wood or Light Ash trim panels add a refined touch. The panoramic glass roof and laminated windows enhance cabin tranquillity, aligning with Volvo’s focus on creating a serene driving environment.

The EX90’s dual motors produce 380 kW and 910 Nm, propelling the SUV from 0–100 km/h in 4,9 seconds and, although the launch drive was short and in the midst of Cape Town rush hour, the acceleration is exquisite and ride comfortable, although you can feel just how heavy the vehicle is with the battery pack.

Its 111 kWh battery offers up to 751 km of urban range or 604 km on mixed cycles, according to preliminary estimates. Using a 250 kW DC fast charger, drivers can replenish the battery from 10%–80% in 30 minutes. Volvo CEO Jim Rowan praised the model’s capabilities after a 950 km US road trip, highlighting its “responsive handling and seamless charging experience.”

Exterior styling embraces Volvo’s signature minimalism, with LED ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights, a body-coloured grille, and 22-inch aero wheels. A gloss-black roof and lower trims contrast with options like Denim Blue, Mulberry Red, and Platinum Grey. The SUV also features a powered tailgate and panoramic roof, underscoring its blend of elegance and functionality.

Available from April, the EX90 starts at R2,650,000. The package includes a three-year/60 000 km maintenance plan, five-year vehicle warranty and eight-year battery coverage. Buyers receive a GridCars home charger with installation, two years of complimentary public charging and 10 GB of monthly data for three years via Vodacom.
