Kyalami, Gauteng – South Africa’s automotive landscape is being reshaped by younger consumers and a rapid influx of new technology, from hybrid powertrains to all-electric offerings, as revealed at the 2025 Festival of Motoring.
Despite global economic headwinds, the local market remains resilient. WesBank's Head of Vehicle Ecosystem Development, Declan Jones, highlighted that millennials are a dominant force, with those under 35 accounting for 45% of the bank's customer base.
"The ongoing trend of consumers seeking affordability has led to longer finance terms," Jones stated. In July 2025, the average contract was 72 months for new cars and 76 months for used vehicles.
A key growth area is the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sector. From January 2022 to July 2025, WesBank financed 287 battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with the used market—including demo models—making up a significant 49% of that figure.
"Tracking the NEV market in its entirety, including pre-owned vehicles, is critical for future planning, from the rollout of charging infrastructure to potential incentives," said Jones. He noted the used market provides a vital, more affordable entry point for consumers.
NADA Chairperson Brendon Cohen described 2025 as a "strong year for local car dealers," attributing it to new brands, healthy inventory, stable fuel prices, and interest rate cuts. However, he confirmed financial strain is keeping the sub-R400 000 segment as the market leader.
"In the absence of any major shocks, we should see sustained growth despite the relatively slow pace," Cohen concluded, anticipating muted growth due to economic pressure.
Amid this backdrop, several manufacturers unveiled significant new models for the South African market.
